Pars from the Same Group

Yesterday saw Frank Dorrian and Paul Wheelan record the first Par Rounds (54) of the 2025 Season playing in the same group. A final hole Birdie from Frank leveled up the scores to create the strange scenario of 2 Pars from the Same Group.

Here is the Pars scorecard.

No pressure on Phil next time out…

Simon Kunding Aces 7th

Simon Kunding aces 7th

Despite being one of the most difficult holes on the course Simon Kunding aces the 7th Hole and is the first hole in one on that hole since the 2023 season. Well done to Simon.

London Buses

Hole in Ones are just like London Buses, you can wait a long time for one and the 2 or 3 come along straight after.

Monday saw one of our younger junior players ‘Orla Grey Byrne’ started the ball rolling with a wonderful Hole in One on the 18th Hole. This was quickly followed on Tuesday when one of our regular players Paul Wheelan aced the 1st Hole.

Just like London Buses we are now waiting for the next one to come along.

Opening Day Stag

We were so please to be able to get the course Open for Saturday 5th April not just for all our Patrons but also as we knew that Oskar Winkler who was organising a Stag Party really wanted to come and bring his group of 20 to play Pitch and Putt at Sandfield as part of their schedule. It was always going to be a tough call to get the course ready for the Easter period as always due to the long wet winter and also the damage we suffered during Storm Éowyn. We were blessed with a 2/3 week dry spell that really allowed us to get on the course and get ready to open and it went right down to the wire when we confirmed on Friday we would be open for the Opening Day Stag Party..

So the Opening Day Stag did happen and we were pleased to welcome Oskar and the other 19 guys and thank them for the care and respect they showed us and the course and were happy the guys enjoyed their visit to Sandfield Pitch and Putt. And a big thank you to Oskar for the kind present.

2025 Season

We are pleased to announce that we have managed to get the course OPEN on Saturday 5th April for the 2025 Season, this despite the usual very wet Winter and some serious damage caused by Storm Éowyn on 24th January.

Thanks to the recent dry spell over the last fortnight this gave us the opportunity to get the course in a playable condition, although we still have some ongoing maintenance, clean up and required work to get the green in top condition. Opening on 5th April is a first for us as it is the earliest date we have managed to get open since we took over at Sandfield Pitch and Putt in 2021 but weather permitting will mean we should be open for the Easter Holiday period.

Another first is the addition of our first Sand Bunker situated behind the 16th Green. This was done as a result of some of the storm damage which uprooted and split the iconic tree that framed the green. We hope our players will enjoy (and avoid) the new hazard.

We look forward to welcoming all our regular Patrons and our visiting guests new and old during the upcoming 2025 Season. This may well be the last season of the ‘Old Course’, as we hope to have the 3 new Holes around Morgan’s Loch in play for next Season, along with some exciting new developments at the course.

New Sand Bunker behind 16th Hole

Storm Éowyn

Sandfield Pitch and Putt did not escape the ravages of the extreme high winds of Storm Éowyn at the end of January with extensive damage to many trees and Whin Bushes.

The majority of trees behind the cabin came down with some of them actually falling onto the cabin, fortunately they did not cause any structural damage to the cabin. Sadly we lost the iconic tree behind the 16th green that framed the Hole. We have plans to create a new bunker behind the green providing a different challenge for the upcoming season.

We continue to work on the new holes and hope they will be ready for the 2026 Season while drainage works continue as we try to make the course more resilient to the changing and wetter weather patterns.

Hole in One Heaven

There must have been something in the water here at Sandfield Pitch and Putt this week! As July is turning out to be a a Hole in One Heaven, with 3 quick fire aces in the last few days.

Rachel Irwin started the hole in one heaven week on Saturday. Being the first player to ace the 16th Hole this season.

On Tuesday this was quickly followed up with two players getting Holes in One. First up on Tuesday was Tijs ven Eyjen. Visiting from Belgium he got his hole in one on the new 12th Hole with a classy shot. A shot that i was lucky enough to witness. This was quickly followed up when amazingly in the next group on the course Joanna McAdam got a Hole in One on the course favourite 14th Hole. Both players being the first to record Holes in One on these holes this season.

Here are the happy players after their great shots and well done to all of them:

Course Update 2nd May

Welcome to the course update as of 2nd May 2024

We are pleased to announce that the course will open for he 2024 Season on Friday, 3rd May at 1pm, with the last tee off time being 7pm.

Due to the very wet winter we have had to dig a major new drain running from 3rd hole and down the 4th Hole fairway then across the front of the 14th hole to the open drain. This has caused some damage to the surfaces on those holes. In addition, we have suffered serious Badger problems this winter and a number of greens have been badly damaged and are not 100% repaired yet. The effected greens are the 1st, 14th and 15th Greens. The newly re-seeded green on the 8th Hole unfortunately died over winter mainly due to the extremely wet conditions. We have had to re-seeded again and will not be available for opening. We are looking at potential temporary hole locations but this might prove difficult. There is also badger digging damage to a number of fairways.

On a brighter note we are starting to transition to the ‘new’ course layout and the 1st of 3 new holes on the hill around the lake will be available for the opening day of 2024 Season. This will be the new 12th hole replacing the existing one. This will allow us to start work on potentially creating a new raised peninsular green for the 11th hole. We will start to build an exciting new semi-island green on the site of the old 12th green with the tee for being situated high on the hill around the lake and we hope this new hole will start to challenge the current 14th Hole as the favourite with our players. We hope this hole and the 2 new holes on the hill around the lake will be fully operational for the 2025 Season.

The 13th Tee has been moved to the left of the open drain and will now work on creating a new 13th green behind the existing one. Potentially making the hole 20 meters longer.

We have also replaced more of the old Rubber Mat Tees with the new AstroTurf mat layouts. The holes with the new full Tee layouts are 5th, 6th ,7th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Holes. We aim to add the new Tee layouts to 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th before the end of the season.

We look forward to seeing all our existing and any new first time customers during the 2024 Season.
